A collection of self-portrait photos that John put together, with a few explanatory notes.
In 2007, apparently with nothing better to do (he,he), John took a series of photos of the house accross the road, number 420, while it was being extended. John commented "Photos I took when they were building the extension across the road. I will give them a copy sometime." I wonder if he ever did?
These are some stories told or re-told. Enjoy.
John wrote about some walking he did in Scotland during 1983
A collection of recipies gathered from around the PC, most copied from Grandad's records
Letters from John, some of them capturing his criptic comments. A set to the crowd in New Zealand, and a few "official" notes to companies.
Here are some e-mail messages between John and various family members, some of which he, for some reason, made into web-pages. Having scanned through the emails he had on his PC, I have also reproduced a few more of them here to give a flavour of the man. Watch out for his dry sense of humour
Willie & Queenie kept diaries. Not long rambling diaries about what they were feeling about what was happening to them, but just punchy little records of the events of each day. John seems to have transcribed the contents for the 4 years from 1989 to 1992, and prepared html pages for each one. The contents will mean nothing to most of the current generation, but Paul & Moira do remember many of the events recorded here
John tried dictating some stories, including punctuation, and then tried converting the recording to a text document. Typically precise if not actually pedantic, and not that successful in the end. He only did it for one or two documents before abandoning the process. It is really boring, but I have included it mostly just to hear his voice!
Grandad Bill spent the last year of his life in Springboig Care Home in Glasgow. This photo album was used to show staff about his life, and the inspection reports reveal a well run care home
Some random photos of the family graves, mostly in St Peter's Graveyard, Dalbeth, Glasgow, and Mary down in Staffordshre. RIP all.
Bits & Bobs - Some items John gathered during his lifelong interest in the Paddle Steamer Waverley. These were produced by others, John just picked them up along the way.
Boring items added for information, interest or just because Paul wanted them to be available and not lost to posterity.
John's record of journeys on buses from January, 2018 'till just before he passed away. Who knows why he kept this record, as he had a bus pass and there was no cost involved, which was one reason he kept meticulous records
The Case of Rev McLaughlin in 1862 - A matter of conscience? This was the case of the priest at St Pauls, Shettleston being involved in a court case because he would not "squeal" on a parishoner accused of a crime
The history of the cost of one of the family cars, a wee Metro 1.1L 3 door, from purchase to it's demise 7 years later. Similarly boring details of the Vauxhall Corsa he replaced it with in 2007 can be found in his original files (D/ooDOCS/cars.ods)
John wrote some small computer programs to help his work.
"A few useful programs I have written over the years. Most of the source is in the WIN98 virtual machine since my Borland C++ software development kit has issues with Vista."
Note:- If you do want to look at any of the programs (.exe files) they are here in a directory "family/joshPrg". You will need to contact whoever is administrating the website now to get copies, and you need to download them along with the 2 .bpl files which should be placed in the same directory.
