Why can't I buy a spring for a 25 year old sofa?

Dear Sir or Madam,

About 25 years ago, my parents purchased a three-piece suite from your company which has served us well.

Over the years, castors have collapsed and seat springs broken but we have always been able to obtain replacements from your showrooms, at first free from St Vincent Street and more recently for a nominal charge from Birkenshaw, the last occasion being about three years ago.

Today, when we again have need of a couple of seat springs, Birkenshaw no longer stock them and, on phoning Customer Service at Hillington, I am informed that there is no procedure to make such springs available to customers.

It is sad that an otherwise sound suite is condemned to the scrap heap for the want of a couple of bendy bits of metal with 13 bends on one side and 14 on the other.

Yours sincerely

John Reynolds
