Information that I have is that my grandmother, Jean (Anne/Violet???) McLelland was born July 8, 1898. Her father's name was David and her mother's maiden name was Turnbull. When doing LDS research of 1898 I found, according to the Index of Birth for Scotland in 1898 Janet Smith Green McLelland was registered at following parishes: Calton Glasgow (681) and also Shettleston (355). Both these parishes are:Calton (1855-1906) in the county of Lanark (Parish #644/4) and Shettleston (1875-1912) in the county of Lanark (Parish #622/2) This information showed me "2" parishes -but - it also showed a different name than my grandmothers. My grandmother died at an early age and her only living daughter was 6 at the time and knows very little. Could someone check for me to see if either of these record could be my grandmother? Thank you, Nancy

If you don't get a better offer, I should be able to check this for you next Tuesday (27th). Please confirm that you want the details for the births of Janet Smith Green McLelland as registered under 1898 622/2 No.355 (Shettleston) 1898 644/4 No.681 (Glasgow - Calton) If neither of these has father David and mother's m.s. Turnbull then you really would like details for Jean (Anne/Violet???) McLelland, allegedly born July 8, 1898. (I take it that's a middle name Anne or Violet or something?) I'll only have access to the records for Glasgow and surrounding counties so hopefully she wasn't born too far away. hth Josh

Most show Jeanette or Jean but when she was given to Barnardo's home in 1910, it showed that her mother left her father when she was 1 year old and the lived on the streets for 10 years. Because of this, I would guess she made up her own middle names. I can see how the name Jeanette amd Janet could sound the same and her mother also gave her maiden name and birth date and said she was born in Glasgow. All records show her birth as July 8, 1898. I would really appreciate it if you could check the records on the 27th. I know so little about her and her family and I would like to learn about them. Thank you so much for your offer. This was according to the microfiche that I sent for from the LDS. Nancy

Turnbull married: 1891 January 5th, Glasgow informant: David McLelland, Father, 22 Front Square, Tollcross registered: 1898 July 18th at Glasgow, Fred. G. Morton, Asst. Registrar. The Shettleston record has the margin note - "Parish of Birth - Calton", David McLelland's name is written in by the registrar whereas the Calton record is signed by him, and was registered "Transcribed at Shettleston" on July 19th. Otherwise, it shows the same details. I have no idea how such a double entry comes about. Since hospital births became common, it is normal for a birth to be registered _either_ in the district of the birth _or_ the home of the parents but I don't think it is registered in both places. So I had a look for the marriage in 1891 and didn't find it but - 1892 644/12 Glasgow - Gorbals No.68 On the 5th January at 34 Abbotsford Place, Glasgow after Publication according to the Forms of the Church of Scotland David McLelland, Slotting Machine Keeper, (Bachelor), Age 27, usual residence 3 St. James Street, Kingston, Glasgow father: David McLelland, Vertical Machine Keeper mother: Mary McLelland m.s. Porter (deceased) Jane Turnbull, Powerloom Weaver, (Spinster), Age 18, usual residence 22 Crown Street, Glasgow father: Thomas Turnbull, Boilermaker (Journeyman) mother: Annie Turnbull m.s. Dickson celebrant: Andrew Leiper, Minister of Gorbals Parish witnesses: Adam Cook & Sarah Murphy registered: 1892 January 7th at Glasgow, Jno Brown Registrar. I'm afraid I decided that there were too many options for Jane's birth and gave up at that point. I've also had a look at the LDS 1881 Census transcription for Lowland Scotland and cannot see any families with the right parents and child. So, there you are, as far as it goes. I can guess what a "planing machine" machine might be in wood or metal work but have no idea about "slotting" or "vertical" machines. Oh yes, Tollcross is in Shettleston Parish/District Over to you <G> Josh

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Not only did you find my grandmother's birth certificate, but the finding of her marriage and the names of her parents parents is really a windfall for me. I live about 25 miles from a large LDS church in Washington State USA, which has the UK census CD's and with the information that you provided to me I'll be able to research more details of her family. Knowing the names of her grandparents and the maiden names of her grandmother's will give me a lot to be able to research. I can hardly wait until I have time to look into this. I can't thank you enough for taking the time to do this research for me. I really do appreciate your help. Nancy p.s. I'll let you know what I learn.

(Her birth name was different than what I thought her name was) It really was my grandmother and he also looked up and found my ggrandparents marriage certificate. I also want to thank Kate, who I found lives less than 30 miles from me in the state of Washington, USA and who I spend over an hour on the phone. She checked the census 1881 and found my grandmothers maternal parents. My next step will be to see what I can find locally at the LDS, library and local genealogical library pertaining to the information I now have. I've really appreciated the time taken by both of these people. Again, thank you!!!!! Nancy
